Coffee to crisis: it's complicated

While in queue at a well-known coffee store yesterday, I couldn't believe what I heard when the gentleman in front of me placed his order. When did a plain cup of coffee morph into a double shot, white chocolate, soya mocha with skinny whipped cream?

As the waist lines of our population continue to expand, these days coffee shops have become land mines waiting to explode with their calorie laden weapons. Splurges that used to be reserved for special occasions have become a necessary morning ritual for many people.

As we find ourselves living in a world where everything needs to be easier, faster, and convenient, why do we feel the need to over-complicate things?

Since as early as I can remember my father takes his coffee simple, with a little extra touch. A good little cup of coffee accompanied with a small piece of lemon zest. Simple, yet sophisticated and a very powerful explosion of taste.

My message is that life can still be simple, beautiful and elegant. It is about focussing on quality without compromise, and not about adding a billion bells and whistles (or skinny whipped cream and sprinkles to your mocha latte).

How do you feel about getting back to simplicity? Where the only question should be, how much sugar will you add to your coffee?
